JOWAI: The illegal collection of boulders from the famous Lukha river in Jaintia Hills has concerned environmentalists and a group of NGOs, particularly the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Narpuh Circle.
The KSU Narpuh circle, had in March last, lodged a complaint against the National Buildings Construction Corporation Ltd. (NBCC) and also against some local suppliers who their involvement in illegal extraction of boulders, but no action was taken based on the complaint.
“We inspected the river at Borsora recently and found two dumper trucks being loaded with boulders. On enquiring from the truck drivers, we learnt that they had been engaged by Borsora Rangbah Shnong, Sharai Lamare, and one Abel Mukhim,” the KSU informed.
“We are going to inspect the river again and if these people continue to extract boulders from the river, we will take all these people to the court of law. This is a violation of the recent order and directives issued by the National Green Tribunal,” the KSU stated.
The KSU also informed that despite their complaint filed in March last against illegal extraction and collection of boulders from the Lukha river, the law implementing agencies had allowed the law breakers to go scot free.
