Employee dies, jawan injured in accidental blast in army camp

Jammu: A civilian employee was killed and a Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) injured in an accidental blast in an Army camp in Jammu district on Wedesday. During repair of some explosive device at Nagrota Corps formation on the outskirts of the city, an accidental blast occurred resulting in injuries to two persons including an Army NCO, a senior Army officer said. As they were being shifted to hospital, the civilian identified as Sanjeev Kumar, who was injured in the abdomen, died, he said, adding that Havaldar Mohanty was hospitalised. A Court of Inquiry has been ordered into the incident. (PTI)

Illegal Mining Vigilance Force set up in Uttarakhand

Dehradun: An Illegal Mining Vigilance Force has been set up in Uttarakhand to rein in the illicit trade. The force has been given enough powers so that it can take effective steps to rein in illegal mining in the state, an official release quoting Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister S S Sindhu said. The Force headed by DIG Sanjay Gunjyal consists of four teams entrusted with the task of cracking down on people engaged in illegal mining in Dehradun, Haridwar, Udhamsingh Nagar and Nainital districts. Each team comprises 12 constables, one inspector and one Superintendent of Police besides forest officials of sub-divisional level. Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna had recently announced that a special vigilance force will be created in the state to take effective steps against illegal mining. (PTI)

Outgo on account of six per cent DA to be Rs 1800 cr

Kolkata: West Bengal finance minister Amit Mitra today said that the outgo on account of six per cent additional DA would be Rs 1,800 crore annually. Mitra said that this was the third time that the new Trinamool government increased the DA that amounted to 23 per cent since May 2011. The first two hikes were ten per cent and seven per cent respectively, he said. Mitra said that the state government, despite the financial crisis, had been able to clear the DA backlog which was passed on by the previous Left Front government. With this rise, the total amount of DA would be 58 per cent, Mitra told reporters outside the Assembly here. The gap between the central DA and state DA from January would be reduced to 32 per cent from 38 per cent, he said. (PTI)

PNB official convicted in graft case

Bhopal: A Special CBI Judge has convicted a former branch manager of Punjab National Bank in a graft case and sentenced him to undergo three years rigorous imprisonment with a total fine of Rs 40,000. The court has convicted K K Namdeo, the then Branch Manager, Punjab National Bank, posted at Betul under provisions of Prevention of Corruption Act, a CBI spokesperson said here on Wednesday. “CBI had registered a case on May 20, 2011 against K K Namdeo, the then Branch Manager, Punjab National Bank, Multai, Betul(MP) under section seven of PC Act 1988 on the allegation that Namdeo demanded bribe of Rs 56,000 from the complainant for getting loan of Rs 5.6 lakh, sanctioned and disbursed to him,” the agency said in a statement. It said Namdeo was caught while demanding and accepting the bribe of Rs 5000 from the complainant on May 21, 2011. “After investigation, a charge sheet under section seven and 13(2) read with 13(1)(d) of PC Act 1988 against Namdeo was filed on June 30, 2011 in the court of Special Judge for CBI Cases, Bhopal. “The trial court found the accused guilty and convicted him,” it said. As they were being shifted to hospital, the civilian identified as Sanjeev Kumar Baru, who was injured in the abdomen, died, he said, adding that Havaldar Mohanty was hospitalised. A Court of Inquiry has been ordered into the incident. (PTI)
