WKH to witness first ever Rice Festival

SHILLONG: The Basin Development Unit, West Khasi Hills District in collaboration with the Mawthadraishan Farmers and Livestock Farming and Social Welfare Organisation will organize the first Rice Festival at Markasa on December 2.

The event will mark the onset of the harvesting season and aims to create awareness among the people of the district and the State regarding the potentiality of the areas to produce some of the best quality of rice in the country.

The Festival will also try to promote the market access and create awareness of the need to adopt modern technologies such as high yielding varieties best suited to the local conditions. Issues in rice cultivation will also be addressed during the event.

Integrated Basin Development and Livelihood Programme (IBDLiP) Nodal Officer, S Warjri said that West Khasi Hills produces some of the best quality rice using the traditional methods of cultivation and harvesting.

The Festival also aims at promoting maize and corn cultivation amongst the farmers.
