SHILLONG: Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma has directed the political department to examine the mechanisms adopted by several traditional heads (Rangbah Shnong) to deal with the problem of influx of illegal migrants in the State.

The directive comes after 13 Dorbar heads contended that they have a better mechanism to check influx of illegal migrants than the proposed Tenancy Act.

Talking to media persons here on Thursday, Dr Sangma said that he has also spoken with the Community and Rural Development (C& RD) minister to examine such mechanisms.

According to the Chief Minister, any mechanism to tackle influx needs to be institutionalized and can also be integrated with other mechanisms to address the issue of influx.

“If all are serious then let’s find out the best solution to check influx,” Dr Sangma asserted.

Reacting to a query about the Inner Line Permit (ILP), he said that the State Government cannot amend the Act and its request will not find support from other states.

Dr Sangma added that ILP does not help any state but creates a negative impact on its growth instead.

According to the Chief Minister, there is a need to analyse as to why demand for implementation of ILP is coming from Meghalaya and other northeastern states including Assam.

“If all states implement ILP then what will happen to us. Even we will need permission to go to other states,” he said.

He also stressed on the need to have a national data to determine genuine Indian citizens from illegal immigrants.
