Meghalaya Regulation of Landlords and Verification of Tenants Bill, 2013

SHILLONG: Like most of the Rangbah Shnongs, Riatsamthiah Dorbar Shnong has rejected the Meghalaya Regulation of Land Lords and Verification of Tenants Bill, 2013.

In a letter submitted to the MLA Roshan Warjri, Riatsamthiah Dorbar Shnong general secretary AR Myrthong said that the Dorbar Shnong has not been considered to be informed of such a Bill that is to be passed and implemented in the State.

The Dorbar Shnong also questioned the need for such a Bill when the existing traditional customs and practices of land owners -tenant relationship in the Dorbar Shnongs functioned harmoniously.

AR Myrthong questioned the intention of the Bill saying that it wanted to interfere in the duty and responsibility of the Dorbar Shnong.

According to Myrthong, the Act is to assimilate the Dorbar Shnong into Panchayati Raj system of the State.

The Dorbar Shnong even said that the powers of the district task force under section 4 of the draft bill would grossly interfere with the smooth functioning of the Bill.

It may be mentioned that unruffled by the initial setback, Chairman of the Ministerial Committee, Prestone Tynsong, on Saturday said the process of public consultations on the draft Bill, would continue in the State.
