SHILLONG: The State Bank of India (SBI) is currently engaged in the task of drawing up a comprehensive plan to ensure foolproof security in the ATMs.

The move comes in the wake of the recent attack on a woman inside an SBI ATM in Bengaluru.

The Bank authorities are now working on the security steps that need to be taken to avoid any untoward incident inside the ATMs, sources informed on Sunday.

It is learnt that the bank authorities are planning to install CCTV cameras outside the ATMs, besides taking other steps to ensure proper security for the customers.

On the absence of security guards in SBI ATMs in the city, the sources informed that the Bank had, earlier, employed security guards inside the ATMs but due to problems created by anti-social elements, ) the security guards had to be removed.

The sources also pointed out that ATMs managed by other banks had security guards since they operate only a few ATMs whereas for the SBI, which operated around 120 ATMs across the city and its surroundings, it is a huge task to provide security guards in each of its ATMs.

“We will implement our new security measures very shortly,” the sources asserted.
