Pressure groups announce night road blockade

Fresh ILP stir from tomorrow

SHILLONG: Intensifying their agitation for introduction of the contentious ILP system in the State to regulate the entry of outsiders, the pro-ILP pressure groups have announced a three-night road blockade from December 4 to 6.

The blockade, which will be effective from 9 pm to 5 am the following day, would be effective in the entire state and could affect transportation of goods and essential items to Tripura, Mizoram and Barak Valley in Assam.

“We have decided to resume our agitational programme as per the resolution taken during the public rally on November 30,” KSU vice-president Frederick Kharmawphlang said in a statement issued here on Monday.The pressure groups at the public rally had unanimously resolved to intensify their agitation till the State Government agrees to implement ILP.

He said that in view of the various ongoing examinations of the schools and colleges, they decided to call for the night road blockade.

“We would be holding more aggressive agitation after the examinations if Government continues to remain adamant over their demands,” Kharmawphlang said.

The KSU, which is spearheading the agitation since September 2 along with the FKJGP and a few other pressure groups in the state, is of the opinion that ILP is the only solution to check influx of illegal migrants. The Congress-led government, meanwhile, has appointed a ministerial team to hold public consultation on the proposed Meghalaya Landlords and Tenancy Verification Bill, 2013, aimed at the solving the issue.
