SHILLONG: St Gabriel Secondary School, Upper Shillong, emerged as overall team champions in the boys category while OM Roy Memorial Higher Secondary School were the overall champions in the girls category at the District Level Inter-School Boxing Tournament, held at the Indoor Sports Hall, Mawlai Mawroh, which concluded on Wednesday.
OM Roy Memorial HSS were the runners-up in the boys category while Multi Purpose HSS, Mawngap, emerged came second in the girls category.
There was plenty of action on display on the second and final day of the competition and, speaking after the event, boxing coach Larry Kharpran acknowledged that there is talent among the young group of boxers.
However, he stated that many of them are still quite “raw” and require further coaching to develop their talent fully. He also said that the youngsters will also need to build on their physique and added that the future development of the sport in Meghalaya will depend on the government’s continued support.

Girls results: Jessica Kurbah (St Paul HSS) defeated Riyaki Kurbah (Evershine SS) 30-33kg; Wanrilin Kharkongor (OM Roy HSS) defeated Cherry Queen Lyndoh (Multi Purpose Presbyterian HSS) 42-44kg; Iphidamon Dohling (OM Roy HSS) defeated Mohini Rymbai (Church of God ECC) 44-46kg; Baphilari Wahlang (Multi Purpose Presbyterian HSS) defeated Darisha Mawthoh (Mawryngkneng HSS) 46-48kg; Eva Waynie Marbaniang (OM Roy HSS) defeated Ibadapbiang Kharsohnoh (St Gabriel HSS) 48-50kg.
