Appointment of Nongkseh traditional head

SHILLONG: The Kur Thangkhiew Laikpoh (clan) secretary Kyrmenskhem Thangkhiew said that KHADC CEM Pynshngaiñ N Syiem was misled over the election of the Basan (traditional head) of Nongkseh.

“We are surprised to see the claim of the CEM that they had never conducted an election to elect the Basan of Nongkseh. This is totally misleading since the Basan of Nongkseh has always been elected by way of election which is a democratic process,” Thangkhiew said while taking to newsmen here on Wednesday.

He further warned the CEM not to be misguided by few vested interests in connection with the internal matters of the clan.

“He (Syiem) would be held responsible if the democratic process of electing the Basan of Nongkseh is violated to suit the interest of few vested individuals who wants to suppress the voice of the majority of the members of the clan,” clan secretary said. He argued that that the appointment of the new Basan, Nathaniel Thangkhiew by the Syiem of Mylliem was illegal without the knowledge of majority of the members of the clan.

Thangkhiew also reiterated that the Syiem of Mylliem had made the appointment on the directive of the KHADC even as arguing that this appointment was made without following the mandatory procedures like the holding of the elections.

The clan secretary also claimed that the clan members have been kept in the dark about the appointment of the new Basan.

Earlier, the KHADC CEM had stated that the appointment of the new Basan was made on the recommendations made by the Rangbah Kur (head of the clan).

“As per the convention, the election of the Basan of Nongkseh is being made as per the recommendations of the Rangbah Kur after holding the general meeting of the clan.

There was never an occasion where election was held for appointment of the Basan,” Syiem had stated.
