Agartala: Chairman of Agartala’s National Institute of Technology (NIT) Prof P N Singh has convened a Board of Governors (BoG) meeting on December 10 to resolve the deadlock continuing for past five days following death of a student allegedly due to lack of medical facilities in the institute.
Institute’s officials informed UNI that Prof Singh will hold a meeting with Chief Secretary Dr S K Panda tomorrow to apprise him of the initiative being taken by NIT authority to upgrade medical facilities and hostel amenities to restore normalcy in the campus.
Dr Panda on December 6 had called Prof Singh for a meeting following violent activities of the students of NIT in Agartala’s Government Medical College (AGMC) alleging poor medical infrastructure in the institute that resulted in the death of the student.
“The NIT is found to be interested to build an international standard sports complex but the authority is yet to take any initiative to set up medical care in the campus or buy ambulance and ensure good hostel amenities to restore the culture of education,” the students alleged in a memorandum to West Tripura District Magistrate and Collector Kiran Gitte.
They also alleged that entire NIT administration has became corrupt and using the institute for their personal gain and well-being as repeated appeals to the authority have felt on deaf ears.
“We could not get any vehicle to carry our classmate to hospital even after an hour of his recovery from a hostel bathroom and finally we managed a manually pulled load carrier to bring him to hospital about five kilometres outside the campus where also he was not treated simply (but) referred to AGMC,’ the students complained.
Meanwhile, hundreds of students have participated in a silent protest candlelight rally last evening demanding arrest of NIT authorities personnel responsible for the death of the student.
They alleged NIT authorities were totally responsible for the death, which could have been easily avoided had there been a health centre inside the campus.
Electronics and Telecommunication second year student Rahul Swaraj from Bihar was recovered from his hostel bathroom in an unconscious condition by other inmates on December 4 and was immediately shifted to Jirania hospital.
The doctors there referred to AGMC where he was left without treatment for an hour, as there was no senior doctor available to treat him.
The intern doctors and student administers administered some primary medicine but was ultimately he was declared dead. (UNI)
