Mild tremors in Kozhikode
Kozhikode: Mild tremors were felt in the city and a few adjoining areas on Sunday. Besides Kozhikode, Cheruvannur, Beypore and Panniyankara experienced the tremors lasting a few seconds around 10 AM, District Collector C A Latha told PTI. There was no report of any casualty or damage to property, she said. (PTI)
Two crushed to death
Muzaffarnagar: A woman and her son were crushed to death by a speeding bus on Panipat-Khatima Highway near Ikhera village in the district, police said Sunday. Baleshwari, 50, and her son Sumesh Pal, 20, were en route to attend a wedding last evening when their motorcycle collided with the bus coming from the opposite side, they said. The driver of the bus, Abrar, has been taken into custody. (PTI)
3 succumb to Encephalitis; toll reaches 616
Gorakhpur (UP): The encephalitis menace continues unabated in eastern Uttar Pradesh as three more children succumbed to the disease at BRD Medical College Hospital, official sources said here Sunday. With the three deaths, which took place during the last 24 hours, the death toll due to the disease has climbed to 616 this year. The sources in the office of Additional Director (Health) said 12 fresh cases of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome were detected and the patients admitted to BRD-MCH during the period. 176 patients suffering from AES are being treated at BRD-MCH and different government hospitals of the region, the sources said. This year, 61 patients from Bihar and 2 from Nepal died in BRD-MCH, they said. (PTI)
HC notice to Shahrukh, BMC in sex determination case
Mumbai: The Bombay High Court has issued notices to Shahrukh Khan and his wife Gauri on a petition filed by a social activist, challenging a magistrate’s order refusing her application for documents pertaining to the couple’s child born through surrogacy. Varsha Deshpande has filed a complaint in the magistrate’s court seeking action against Shahrukh, Gauri and city-based Jaslok Hospital under the Pre-conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection) Act (PCPNDT). She has alleged that Khans had conducted a sex determination test before their third child, AbRam, was born through surrogacy. Deshpande has sought documents pertaining to the surrogacy process and documents collected by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in its inquiry into the matter. The civic body initiated inquiry following Deshpande’s allegations and gave a clean chit to Shahrukh and his wife, saying no offence under the PCPNDT Act had been committed. “The magistrate rejected our application seeking production and verification of documents following which we approached the High Court,” Deshpande’s lawyer, advocate Uday Warunjikar said. Justice R P Sondurbaldota on Friday issued notices to Shahrukh, Gauri, Jaslok Hospital, and the civic body, and posted the matter for hearing on January 10. (PTI)
Celebrations erupt outside AAP office
New Delhi: Waving brooms – AAP’s election symbol- and placards, jubilant supporters of the party today converged outside its office in large numbers after its impressive performance in the Delhi Assembly election. The activists chanted “Vande Matram” and danced to the beating of drums outside the premises while police beefed up security. AAP senior leader Kumar Vishwas told supporters, who were awaiting the final results, that the party has answered Sheila Dikshit and all others who had raised doubts about it. Supporters were also seen applying colour on each other as celebrations started soon after the trends showed that the party was leading in over 20 seats. (PTI)
School teacher held for fraud
Nagapattinam: Police arrested a 45-year-old school teacher and were looking for one of his associate who had allegedly cheated people to the tune of Rs 45 crore in the name of online trading at Yenagkudi village near here late Saturday night. Police sources Sunday said the arrested D Akbar Ali, an elementary school teacher started an online trading business and collected a huge sum from various people as deposit. He promised them that he would give them higher rate of interest and double their deposits within a short period. However, the teacher neither returned the deposit nor paid them the promised, police added. Based on a complaint from one Basheer Ahmed of Athalaiyur village that the teacher collected a deposit of Rs 60 lakh from him and cheated, the Economic affence wing police arrested Akbar Ali, and were looking for his associate and relatives, including his wife. All of them were said to be absconding, the police added. (UNI)
