Police geared up to maintain peace

SHILLONG: Ahead of the 12-hour bandh called by pro-ILP groups, the district police have assured that security would be beefed up in the city so as to thwart any untoward incident.

The various pressure groups demanding the implementation of ILP in the State have called for a 12-hour bandh from 5 am on Tuesday.

East Khasi Hills SP M Kharkrang on Monday said, “All Government offices would be provided with security to ensure no untoward incident takes place. Escorts would also be provided to anyone travelling within the district.”

East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Sanjay Goyal also said that adequate security arrangements have been made in terms of deployment of magistrates and police personnel across the district.

According to Goyal, altogether 16 magistrates would be deployed throughout the district.

Prohibitory Order under section 144 CrPC is already in force prohibiting any kind of obstruction to the movement or intimidation to the office-goers and the public by any person or group. “Any violation of the prohibitory order would be dealt with as per law,” Goyal said.

The district administration has also arranged for transportation facilities for the public and government employees to attend the office on bandh day.

However, it will be interesting to see if employees turn up for work during the bandh as the attendance in all the office has remained low during previous such occasions.
