SHILLONG: Less than a week after five labourers lost their lives in a coal pit in East Jaintia Hills District, one more labourer died on the spot when a coal mine collapsed in the same district on Friday.

The incident occurred at around 5.30 am when the labourer, Jirmal Boro (32), was working in a coal mine belonging to Weibor Dkhar at Maibon under Umpleng AD Camp, the Officer in-charge of Saipung Police Station said. “After completion of necessary formalities the body was handed over to his relatives,” the OC said, adding that a case has been registered and police inquiry has begun.

This is the second mining tragedy reported from East Jaintia Hills in less than a week after five miners were crushed to death when the cables of a crane snapped midway hurling them down to their deaths on Dec 6.
