Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Nabam Tuki called on UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde to discuss creation of Mon and Patkai Autonomous District Councils in the state.
Tuki, who led a 16-member high-level delegation to Delhi, apprised Gandhi about the need to give autonomy to these districts for development, official sources here said. She was briefed by Tuki and APCC President Mukut Mithi about the development implications of giving autonomy to the areas.
The UPA chairperson assured the delegation that she would expedite the matter, the sources said. Calling on the Prime Minister and Union Home minister, the delegation apprised them about the long standing issue.
The PM and Home minister assured the delegation that the Centre would examine the matter and take measures for creating them as soon as possible, the sources said.
The Cabinet on December 11 had decided to take up the grant of Mon ADC for Tawang and West Kameng districts and Patkai ADC for Tirap, Changlang and Longding districts with the Government of India, taking into consideration the resolution adopted by the assembly.
The Assembly first adopted the resolution moved by TG Rinpoche in 2004, then in 2007 and again on September 23. Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura were under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution with provision for creation of ADCs. Arunachal Pradesh was not given the constitutional benefit.
This was the first time that a chief minister-led delegation from the state was given audience by the UPA Chairperson, the PM and the HM on the same day, the sources added. (PTI)
