Eco-friendly crematorium inaugurated in Jaintia Hills

15 more crematoriums to be constructed in State

JOWAI: Forest and Environment Minister Prestone Tynsong in the presence of local MLA, C. Ymbon and Principal Chief Forest Conservator, TTC Marak inaugurated an eco-friendly crematorium or Ka Khnap Thangbru in Pnar dialect at Phramer, Pasyih village on Thursday
The crematorium was constructed by the Sein Raij Pasyih and is funded by Forest and Environment Department, Jaintia Hills Social Forestry Division, Jowai.
The Khnap Thangbru was constructed at a cost of Rs. 20.50 lakh. The crematorium was based on the design and model of late Kambel Shullai- the inventor of the eco-friendly crematorium who had, in his lifetime, bagged several national awards for the innovation.
“The crematorium will help the people of the entire village at the time. The newly-constructed crematorium will help us save money, time and also the environment,” C Ymbon said.
Speaking as the chief guest, Tynsong lauded the initiative of the local MLA, Coming, the Dorbar Shnong and officer of the Forest Department for the construction of the crematorium which will benefit the people of the village.
The Minister informed that 15 more crematoriums will be constructed in Khasi and Jaintia Hills during the financial year 2013-14. He also informed that Rs 25 lakh will be funded by the Forest and Environment Department.
“Earlier the construction cost was sanctioned at Rs 20 lakh but during the financial year 2013-14 an additional of Rs. 5 lakh will be sanctioned for each construction”, Tynsong said.
Other who spoke on the occasion were Sein Raij Jowai President, JK Passah, West Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner, PS Dkhar, Principal Chief Forest Conservator, TTC Marak. Villager elders, Elders of the Sein Raij Pasyih were also presence during the inauguration of the newly constructed crematorium.
