TURA: A former rebel from the banned Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) has been shot dead by his colleagues on the eve of Christmas in retaliation for breaking the ‘militant code’ by defecting the organization on Tuesday afternoon.
Former GNLA cadre Aldrin Marak had returned to his home village of Raja Apal in North Garo Hills to celebrate Christmas after a gap of several months since his surrender. He was relaxing at home on Tuesday afternoon when three armed rebels believed to be from the GNLA outfit descended on his home. They dragged out the former rebel and shot him dead in cold blood as revenge for deserting the group. The deceased was a former rebel who underwent militant training from the GNLA during the early days of the outfit’s creation. He gave up the armed struggle by handing himself up to the Dogra regiment of the Indian Army at Rangjuli, Assam, which in turn facilitated his surrender to Garo Hills police im March, this year.
