PCF fails to get favourable response from non-Congress parties

SHILLONG: People’s Candidate Forum (PCF) Rev PBM Basaiawmoit has decided to contest from Shillong parliamentary seat without the support of the regional parties after failing get a favourable response from their leaders.
The non-Congress forces have decided to field a consensus candidate in upcoming Lok Sabha polls from Shillong.
The UDP and other regional forces including BJP, KHNAM and NPP had formed a steering committee to have a dialogue with Rev Basaiawmoit on the need to have a consensus candidate to take on the Congress in Shillong seat.
According to sources, the non-Congress forces during a meeting with Rev Basaiawmoit recently had urged him to allow the UDP to put up the candidate.
The meeting ended inconclusively, sources said adding Rev Basaiawmoit looks determined to contest the election even without the support of all the regional parties.
The UDP has projected the party working president Paul Lyngdoh as its candidate while outrightly rejecting the request of the PCF to support the candidature of Rev Basaiawmoit.
PCF has, meanwhile, decided not to hold any more dialogue with the non-Congress forces led by the UDP.
“It is true that the PCF has refused to hold any more meeting with the steering committee formed by the non-Congress forces. It has decided to field Rev Basaiawmoit as its candidate,” a senior UDP leader informed on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the PCF in its statement on Thursday informed that they are going to hold their general meeting on December 30 to kick off their campaign for Rev Basaiawmoit.
