Labourer killed
SHILLONG: A labourer of a road construction company was killed after being assaulted by some miscreants at Sanshnong village in West Khasi Hills on Friday last.
The labourer identified as Bhalu Gupta succumbed to his injuries after three-four miscreants assaulted him along with other workers of M/s BSC-CVC JV Road Construction Company.
A police complaint in this regard has been lodged by the subcontractor of M/s BSC-CVC JV Road Construction Company.
It may be mentioned that labourers in the State, be it in the coal mines or otherwise have been on the receiving end on numerous occasions.
Dacoit apprehended
SHILLONG: Police apprehended a dacoit after he was spotted extorting money from truck drivers along with his accomplices at 7th Mile, North Garo Hills.
The arrested dacoit has been identified as Chavan Momin.
Police said the incident took place on Tuesday when Mendipathar Police while proceeding towards Gairong (NGH) came across five to six armed dacoits extorting money from the truck drivers.
Police fired several rounds to stop them from fleeing and managed to apprehend one of the dacoits while the others escaped into the nearby forest.
Bangladeshis apprehended
SHILLONG: BSF troops of Ryngkua, East Khasi Hills apprehended a Bangladeshi national identified as Mamun Miya while he was trying to cross the international border from Bangladesh.
In another incident on December 27, BSF troops of Gasuapara in South Garo Hills apprehended a Bangladeshi national identified as Saddam Hussain while he was trying to cross the international border from Bangladesh.
During the last week, BSF troops on Meghalaya border apprehended five Bangladeshi nationals and one Indian national besides seizing 485 bottles of liquor and other contraband items valued over Rs 4 lakh while they were being smuggled out of India
Book released
An alumni of All Saints School, Shillong, Arunav Barua’s book of verse “A Rose by Any Other Name-A Collection of Thoughts in Verse” was released at the Guwahati Press Club. The book is published by Trafford Publishing (US). Arunav’s book of verse is an exploration of the dimensions of human thought and emotions.
