District council polls

SHILLONG: Senior cabinet minister HDR Lyngdoh, who is also a member of Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council, has left it to the people of the constituency to decide on whether he should contest in the upcoming district council elections.
Lyngdoh, who represents Nongspung-Sohiong constituency as MDC, said on Thursday that he is yet to take any decision on whether to contest in the district council polls. “It is left to the people of my constituency,” he added.
The senior cabinet minister asserted that the Congress would come back to power in the elections to the district councils.
While the UDP and KHNAM have released the first list of candidates, the Congress is yet to announce the names of the contestants.
Though the regional political parties will make all efforts to increase their numbers in all the three district councils by targeting the Congress, they have not announced any pre-poll alliance in the run up to the polls to take on the latter.
It may be mentioned that the Government is yet to declare the date for holding the polls pending the clearance of Delimitation Bill by the Governor.
According to Lyngdoh, elections will be held as per schedule and the process has to be completed before February 16 which is the expiry of the current term of the councils.
