SHILLONG: The Shillong Sports Association (SSA) will launch its U-14 Inter Club Football Tournament as part of the U-17 World Cup Project, it was announced through a press release on Sunday from the secretary of the Association, B Diengdoh.
All affiliated clubs of the SSA are eligible to participate in the tournament, which is tentatively scheduled for February.
The idea behind the tournament, according to the release, is for clubs to identify talented youngsters in their neighbourhoods and to catch them at a young age in order to groom them for the future.
The SSA will hold corresponding tournaments in 2015 and 2016 for U-15 and U-16, open to the clubs who take part in this year’s U-14 tournament, so that the youngsters can develop their talent through training and match practice ahead of the U-17 FIFA World Cup, which India will host in 2017.
Clubs interested in taking part should confirm their intention by January 20.
