JOWAI: The All Jaintia Youth Welfare Organisation apprehended one Md. Najrul Ahmed for allegedly illegally selling SIM Cards of Airtel, Aircel, Idea, Vodafone, Cell-one and Reliance.

According to AJYWO President, MH Dkhar, around 250 SIM Cards of various service providers were seized from his shop at Ladrymbai.

“He revealed that he has been doing this business for many years. He is getting high profit as he sold them at Rs 200 and Rs. 300 per SIM Card”, the AJYWO informed.

It may be mentioned many people in East Jaintia Hills have been receiving threat calls and other unwanted calls and SMSes from unknown callers. Sometimes they demand money, particularly from coal businessman and the police did not have a lead in the case as the racket of illegal selling of SIM Cards was high in East Jaintia Hills.

Recently a coal businessman in EJH received unwanted SMSes from a person who introduced himself as the acting chairman of the banned militant outfit HNLC.

The AJYWO President expressed his unhappiness over the easy availability of SIM Cards. “This will surely affect peace and tranquility in the entire district if everybody procured unregistered SIM Card without any proper and valid documents,” he added.

The apprehended person was later handed over to the police.
