State task force suggests measure to stop tax evasion

SHILLONG: The Chairman of the State Task Force for Resource Mobilization Dr. BP Todi has submitted another report to the Government giving recommendation for yearly revenue growth of over Rs 30 crore and also gave other recommendations for prevention of evasion of taxes and recovery of outstanding dues.

The recommended revenue growth would be under Meghalaya Value Added Tax Act, Meghalaya Tax on Luxuries (Hotel and Lodging Houses) Act, Meghalaya Motor Vehicles Taxation Act and Meghalaya Amusement and Betting Tax Act.

The State Task Force was constituted by the Government to examine mobilization of additional resources in order to fill the gap in funding the States Annual Plan/Five Year Plan with Dr. B P Todi, Additional Advocate General, Meghalaya as its Chairman and W R Lyngdoh, OSO, ERTS as Member Secretary and other members.

After the transfer of W R Lvngdoh as Deputy Commissioner, the Government appointed K W Marbaniang, Secretary, ERTS as Member Secretary.

The State Task Force earlier submitted three reports and by implementing most of the recommendations, the Government has been able to derive additional annual revenue of over Rs. 200 crores besides indirect growth by preventing evasion.

The State Task Force for Resource Mobilization primarily makes in depth study on regular basis the existing laws, various notification issued from time to time, takes note of the ground reality, practical problems faced by the Officers of the Revenue earning department through interaction with field level Officers in order to find out ways and means for purpose of recommendations for revenue growth, the State Task Force mainly looks into revenue earning Departments such as Tax, Excise, transport, Mines and Mineral and Forest.
