Upper reaches of Nagaland still under grip of severe cold wave

Kohima: Severe cold wave continued to sweep the upper reaches of Nagaland, including the capital town of Kohima, where Mercury has come down 1.8 Degree Celsius for the lowest temperature, disturbing the people to continue their normal life.

According to official reports, in Kohima, at an altitude of 1,444.12 meter above sea level, where the highest temperature is between 11 and 12 degree Celsius, day time is tolerable with clear sunshine, but always in the afternoon a mild breeze started blowing from the Mount Japfu, at an altitude of 2133 meters, started the gradual cold wave.

The Mount Japfu, which is visible from Kohima town and has already been wearing a big cap of snow up to the half of the peak for past three months.

There were reports of snowfall in some of the villages at the foothills of Mount Japfu, especially in the early morning time, but started melting with the sunshine.

The Mount Saramati, at an altitude of 3840.00 meters, the highest peak of Nagaland and is located near Tuensang town, wearing the snow cap for past three months and the highest altitude town Pfutsero town, at an altitude of 2133 meters is under severe cold where the lowest temperature was about to touch zero Degree.

People are coming out of their home only for emergency works or on office duty, otherwise, they preferred to remain inside with chulha of charcoal inside the room to beat the biting cold.

Other high altitude towns are also under the grip of severe cold, which has affected. In some high altitude time the festival season of Christmas and New year continues, as the Government and other offices with limited number of staff present.

The plain areas of the state, like Dimapur, also not spared by the cold wave, which has touches with minimum temperature around 5 degree Celsius and maximum temperature is around 14 degree Celsius.

In the morning early risers first have to take the warmth of fire with a cup of hot tea, before going to their respective works.

As the people of the high altitude areas are well prepared for the seasonal event, there was no report of any casualty due to cold from any part of the state, however stiffing cold and dense fogs and mists are hampering the normal life in the upper reaches of the state. (UNI)
