IAF airlifts pregnant woman, another patient in Kashmir

Srinagar: IAF airlifted two patients including a pregnant woman from remote areas of Kashmir, which have been cut off due to recent snowfall, to nearest government hospital. “As part of the humanitarian effort by the Indian Armed Forces, Indian Air Force (IAF) air lifted four civil persons including a six months pregnant woman facing serious complications from Dawar village of Gurez sector to Bandipora (district headquarter) using Mi-17 helicopter,” an army official said. He said residents of Dawar yesterday requested army for assistance to airlift Khursheeda Begum, wife of Mohammed Ashraf, as she had developed serious complications. “The request was speedily processed by the Dawar Brigade with the Air Force. The request materialised in time and the helicopter was rushed in. “Four persons including the lady were airlifted to Bandipora, enabling life saving treatment,” the official said.  (PTI)

Leh goes in deep freeze at -19 degrees

Srinagar: At almost 19 degrees Celsius below the freezing point, Leh town in the Ladakh region Sunday recorded the lowest temperature of the season in Jammu and Kashmir. The night temperatures in Kashmir also remained several notches below the freezing point. “The minimum temperature was minus 18.9 degrees Celsius in Leh town today (eary Sunday morning), which is the lowest recorded in any town of Jammu and Kashmir this season so far,” the Met Office director Sonam Lotus said here. “In Kargil town of Ladakh region, the lowest was minus 16.6 while it is was minus 12.4 in Pahalgam and minus 10.8 in Gulmarg,” Lotus said. “Jammu city recorded a minimum of 5.9 degrees, which is a degree below normal.” (IANS)

Mumbai engineering student drowns at Harvalem waterfall in Goa

Panaji: A 21-year-old engineering student from Mumbai drowned in Harvalem Water fall in north Goa on Saturday evening. Efforts by Bicholim police and Fire personnel to trace the body proved futile till late last evening. The deceased was identified as Sanil Stephen, a student of Don Bosco Engineering college, Mumbai. According to the police, a group of about 15 to 20 students, had come to Goa on holidays and were staying in a hotel at Calangute. They had yesterday gone sight seeing in north Goa and decided to visit the Harvalem waterfall. When the students group reached the waterfall, four of them including Stephen entered the water for a bath. However, it was learnt that Stephen got pulled away by an underwater current. His companions tried to save him, but in vain.(UNI)

Girl gangraped in North 24 Parganas

Barasat (WB): A 19-year-old girl was gangraped at Gaighata in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district, police said on Sunday. According to the FIR filed by the girl’s family, she was called out of her home by a person on January 10 evening and gangraped by three persons. She later returned home on her own and related the incident to her family. The FIR was lodged on Saurday. District Superintendent of Police Tanmoy Roychowdhury said the police has arrested the three accused. Police security has been provided to the girl and she was being provided with counselling to overcome the trauma. (PTI)

5 killed, 5 hurt in MUV-container collision

Betul (MP):  Five people, including a child, were killed while as many sustained grave injuries when their multi-utility vehicle (MUV) was hit by a speeding container near Multai on Bhopal-Nagpur road on Sunday, police said. The accident occurred when the MUV — carrying devotees who were returning after offering puja at Mahakaleshwar temple in Ujjain — was knocked down from behind by the Nagpur-bound container this morning. Chetan Damre (7), Durgesh (24), Kamlesh Damre (25), Tulsi Chowde (25) and Ravi Gobde (28) died on the spot.(UNI)
