Commuters, drivers sensitised on need to observe road safety rules

road125th National Road Safety Week observed in Jaintia Hills, West Khasi Hills

JOWAI/ NONGSTOIN: The West Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner’s Office and the Office of the Superintendent of Police along with the District Transport Department observed the 25th National Road Safety week from January 11 to January 17 in Jowai, which concluded on Friday.
During the week-long observation various activities was taken up to spread the message of road safety not only among drivers but also among the general public with distribution of pamphlets and posters and banners campaign on road safety.
A drawing competition was also organised on the occasion. Lamphisha-o Najiar and Kimansan-ha-o Najiar, both brothers and members of the Scout, were adjudged first and third position while Chanbor More Dkhar of Thomas Jones Synod College, NSS Unit, bagged the second prize.
On Friday, a rally was organized from Iawthym-me which concluded with a meeting at Thomas Jones Synod College. The district police chief flagged off the rally.
NSS Unit of the Thomas Jones Synod College, Scouts and Guides and newly recruited police personnel took part in the rally carrying placards and banners emphasizing and highlighting issues relating to road safety.
West Jaintia Hills Deputy Commission Peter S Dkhar and the district police chief, who spoke at the meeting, urged members of the NSS Unit, members of the Scouts and Guides and others to spread the message about road safety so that citizens can take precautions to prevent accidents, even though the same cannot be avoided.
West Jaintia Hills SP, Herbert G Lyngdoh, informed that Jowai Traffic Police have conducted vigorous enforcement drives in the district and detected 104 cases of traffic violations.
“We detected cases of traffic violation and compounded all those violators and we have realized an amount of Rs. 41000,” Lyngdoh informed.
The SP also informed that accidents cases in 2013 has come down with only 35 cases registered with no major accidents as compared to 2012 when 108 cases were recorded.
Meanwhile, the Office of the Superintendent of Police, West Khasi Hills District organized a Road Safety Week at Mairang, Pyndeng Umiong, our Nongstoin correspondent adds.

During the programme, awareness on traffic rules was discussed with a large number of drivers who had turned up for the event.
Present at the programme were Sylvester Nongtnger, SP, West Khasi Hills District, SW Mailai, SDPO, Mairang, D Lamin, Enforcement Inspector (DTO Nongstoin), J Marbaniang, OC, Mairang Police Station and HL Nongrang, Secretary, Pyndeng Umiong village.
MSH Nonghuloo, Circle Inspector, Mairang, explained traffic rules to the drivers present.
Addressing the gathering, Nongtnger informed that the event was organized as per orders from the State Government. He mentioned that this order was an opportunity for them to educate the drivers on traffic rules and the Motor Vehicles Act. He urged all drivers to drive carefully, especially those plying with passengers and said that comfort of the passengers during the journey should not be overlooked.
Nongtnger also advised that procuring a valid driving license was essential. He called upon all the young drivers to refrain from speeding and said that speeding could be fatal not only for them but also for those commuting from the other direction.
Nongtnger asked all drivers to keep all vehicular documents at their disposal while driving as surprise checking would be conducted throughout the district and that no excuses would be entertained.
