NONGSTOIN: Dr. Fenela Lyngdoh Nonglait was on Monday unanimously selected as the HSPDP candidate for the upcoming KHADC election from Pariong-Mawthadraishan constituency in West Khasi Hills District.
The announced was made at an executive meeting of the party that eventually turned into a public meeting due to the huge turnout of people of the area. Party workers from all over the constituency attended the meeting and extended their full support to Dr. Nonglait.
It is noteworthy that despite Dr. Nonglait’s loss in the 2013 State Assembly elections to Brolding Nongsiej of the UDP, Pariong-Mawthadraishan has always remained an HSPDP stronghold.
Members of various primary units of the party while expressing sadness for her loss in last year’s Assembly elections, assured her a win in the February 24 district council polls.
Addressing the multitude, Dr. Nonglait said that after the Assembly polls she had decided not to contest elections. However, persistent requests from HSPDP supremo Hoping Stone Lyngdoh and well wishers of the party forced her to join the ‘battlefield of 2014’.
Dr. Nonglait mentioned that the KHADC had under its jurisdiction 25 Himas and 18 Daloiships out of which only two Himas – Nongstoin and Maharam – had their own Constitutions. She assured the gathering that it would be foremost aim to ensure the drafting of Constitutions for every Hima that would enable them to safeguard the indigenous tradition and culture of the Khasis right from the grass-roots level.
During the meeting new executive members of Pariong-Mawthadraishan constituency for the KHADC polls were also elected with RS Sohlang as president and Raskolin Kharlait as general secretary.
Several supporters of the Congress and UDP swore their allegiance to the HSPDP during the meeting.
Interestingly, a donation box was placed at the venue where people willingly donated money for the party’s election expenses in the constituency.
