SHILLONG: The State Government has come under the scanner for the appointment of MPSC chairperson LR Sangma, the former Deputy Commissioner of Tura, who was indicted by the Justice (Retd) D.N. Chaudhuri Inquiry Commission which probed the killing of four youths in police firing during the agitation over the issue of bifurcation of MBOSE in 2005 in Tura.

The Judicial Inquiry Commission had held Sangma responsible for giving permission to the Garo Students Union to hold a public rally and later revoking it.

The report of the Tura Inquiry Commission had also fixed responsibility on some officials, including the police personnel for the firing.

The State Government, instead of acting on the inquiry report, initiated departmental probes to buy time.

Ironically, the departmental proceedings did not find any concrete evidence against the officials named by the Tura Inquiry Commission which defeats the very purpose of instituting the Inquiry Commission.
