PHE yet to complete Stage III

SHILLONG: Notwithstanding the delay in commissioning of Stage III of the Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme (GSWSS), the State Government has now decided to embark on Stage IV of the Project.
Speaking to newspersons on Friday, Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh informed that the department has sent a proposal to the Union Government for sanction of Stage IV of the GSWSS, adding that the department is the nodal agency for the Project and its job is to get the sanction from the Central Government and hand it over to the Public Health Engineering Department for implementation.
Lyngdoh, further, informed that the detailed project report (DPR) of Stage IV has been submitted to the Union Government and the State Government is taking necessary action for early start of the new phase.
She informed that a ‘fourth party’ has inspected the Stage IV project site and reports of the same have been submitted to the Union Government for necessary action.
Admitting that Stage III of the GSWSS is long overdue to technical problems, Lyngdoh asserted that the Central Government has assured all possible assistance for early completion of Stage III.

Far flung towns like Mendipathar, Williamnagar, Jowai, Mylliem and the outskirts of Shillong would be covered under the proposed Stage IV in addition to Stage III of the GSWSS which, once completed, would provide upto 135 litres of water per head per day for a population of nearly 5.12 lakh covering Shillong city.
The GSWSS is a project sanctioned by the Union Government under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).
