SHILLONG: The Bangladesh Government has expressed its willingness to take back the mortal remains of Bangladeshi freedom fighters who lost their lives during the Bangladeshi Liberation War in 1971, on Meghalaya soil.
Speaking to media persons after holding discussions with Chief Minister Dr. Mukul Sangma and other Government officials here on Wednesday, Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Tariq A Karim said that the Bangladesh Government is working on a project under which the mortal remains of those Bangladeshi freedoms fighter which can be identified would be transported to Bangladesh and handed over to the surviving family members.
Asserting that many Bangladeshi heroes had lost their lives on Indian soil during the Liberation War and had been buried in Meghalaya, Karim pointed out that the proposed project would have a huge emotional impact on the people of Bangladesh.
He was also of the view that the Government or the local authorities can put up monuments which could develop into tourist spots or pilgrimage sites for friends and families of the martyrs. “Such an initiative will be a tribute to the bonds that tie Bangladesh and Meghalaya,” Karim said.
