NONGPOH: With less than a month left for the district council election scheduled on February 24, the Congress party in Umsning suffered a blow on Wednesday after senior leader and chief adviser of the Umsning Block Congress Committee (UBCC) Carlus Kharkongor tendered his resignation from the party and announced his decision to contest the district council election as an Independent candidate.
Kharkongor, who was the main aspirant for the Congress ticket from the newly-delimited Umsning constituency, was upset over the fact that the MPCC had awarded the ticket to Dipul Ryntathiang.
Kharkongor, while announcing his resignation from the Congress, said that he was the chief adviser of the UBCC and was a founding member of the Umsning Block Congress and had rendered his selfless and untiring service to the party and to the people of Umsning for the past 25 years. “I have been the vice-chairman of Umsning Town Dorbar and also the Rangbah Shnong of Umsohlang, Umsning, for more than 15 years now, but the Congress party denied the ticket to me which has hurt my sentiment,” he added.
“I took this decision to resign from the party in a public meeting held at the Community Hall of Umsning Umsohlang in the presence of over 300 supporters who have decided to lend their endless support to me in the upcoming election, which I have decided to contest as an Independent candidate,” Kharkongor informed.
He expressed confidence that most of the leaders from the Umsning Congress Block Committee will be joining him soon and would support him in the election.
Political observers are of the opinion that the electorates will be judicious in choosing their candidate as this is the maiden district council election in the newly-created Umsning constituency.
They also observed that Kharkongor who is the present Rangbah Shnong of Umsohlang and vice-chairman of Umsning Town Dorbar holds an edge over the official candidate of the Congress in term of popularity and acceptance among the general masses.
