Kohima: The Rengma Nagas in Karbi Anglong district of Assam have reiterated their demand for the creation of Rengma Hills Autonomous District Council (RHADC) through bifurcation of Rengma Hills from Karbi Anglong based on the original boundary of the Hills and Rengma Mouzas with its headquarters at Bokajan.

In a memorandum submitted to Governor Ashwani Kumar and Chief Minister of Assam Tarun Gogoi after a dharna was organised at Dighali Pukhuri in Guwahati on January 30, copies of which were made available to the press on Saturday, said to protest against the killings of Rengmas on December 27 last.

The dharna was held under the aegis of RNPC, Rengma Naga Students’ Union, Rengma Gaon Bura Committee and Rengma Naga Autonomous District Demand Committee.

Describing the sequence of events leading to the current tension, the memorandum expressed dismay with the Assam government for announcing the ex-gratia payment for the nine Karbis found dead in Dimapur on January 3, 2014 (Rs. 6 lakhs each) without any corresponding ex-gratia payment plan for the Rengmas killed in Assam.
