The Assam Police Service Officers Association (APSOA) has strongly condemned joint secretary (Northeast) Shambhu Singh’s remark that Sonitpur ASP Guljar Hussain ‘got killed by extremists because of his own fault.’
Hussain and a police informant were killed and other policemen injured in an ambush by NDFB(S) militants near Dhekiajuli in Assam’s Sonitpur district on January 28. They were returning from an operation when they were ambushed inside a remote village.
Singh had later said in New Delhi that Hussain should not have returned through the same route he went. ‘He was killed because of his own fault,’ Singh told television channels.
In a statement, the APSOA said the comment of Singh is not only unfortunate and insensitive but an ‘insult to the supreme sacrifice made by a brave and disciplined police officer’.
‘Such careless remarks will harm the morale and the motivation of the Assam Police personnel who have been fighting insurgency since long with commendable success. At the same time, the statement is sure to hurt the sentiments of the members of the bereaved family,’ it said. (UNI)
