Dalai Lama the ‘gospel of peace’: Governor

SHILLONG: Chief Minister Dr. Mukul Sangma said, in his address to the graduating students of MLCU, that the State needs to develop its human capital.

“As you receive the certificates, we are happy the State is enriched in terms of its human capital,” he told the graduates. “The State Government has been focusing on overcoming various challenges in developing human capital and has embarked upon multi-pronged initiatives. We require and will continue to require to invest and develop strong human capital to be able to realise the dreams of the next generation.

“We require partners who dare to dream big and who are driven by positive expectations for it is because of positive expectations that people have reason to hope. Hope is crucial for democracy to be vibrant and sustainable,” he added.

Governor Dr. KK Paul wholeheartedly welcomed the Dalai Lama, the “gospel of peace”, and said that he hopes “his blessings to our State will bring peace, harmony and prosperity.”

Dr. Paul, who is the Visitor to the university, added, “Historically India has been a seat of learning ahead of contemporary civilisations. India could boast of universities like Nalanda and Taxila drawing people even from eastern Asia but somewhere along the years we lost the way. During the last six decades after Independence, India has shown immense progress in the field of education.”

The importance of education lies in its ability to broaden the people’s horizons, Dr. Paul added. “Basic education is also an instrument to set mankind free from the bondage of narrowness. It widens our horizons and changes the contours of our thought process.”

He also urged the university to be in touch with the Innovation Council of India to promote skill development and employability. He also suggested courses on mining technology, which would benefit the youth of the State.

The Pro Chancellor of the university, Dr. Glenn Kharkongor, quoted the Dalai Lama and concluded his introductory speech, by saying, “It is our prayer and good wish that Your Holiness will soon return to Tibet, that the roof of the world will become a sanctuary of peace and a zone of Ahimsa. We wish you all success in your pursuit of the middle way approach for which the honourable Sikyong Dr. Lobsang Sangay has become its articulate spokesperson. Until that time we are blessed to have you with us as a source of wisdom, of light and of hope.”
