Bid to kidnap coal mine supervisor: 2 held

JOWAI: Two persons were arrested for attempting to kidnap a coal mine supervisor at Shyrwang village near Briwar area in East Jaintia Hills District on Monday evening even as three others escaped when the vehicle of the victim was intercepted by cops from Saipung Police Station.

The arrested persons have been identified as Tuniki Siangshai and Phedelri Ryngkhlem while Michael Siangshai, Lucky Siangshai and Niew Dkhar, all from Wapungskur, fled the scene.

According to Officer in charge of Saipung PS, the incident took place at around 3:30pm when the police team was patrolling in and around Briwar, Mynthning and Samasi area.

“When we reached Shyrwang village, some coal labourers informed us that their ‘sordar’ (coal mine supervisor) working with one Harding Chyrmang was kidnapped and taken away in his own vehicle,” said M. Marboh, the Officer in charge adding, “We chased the vehicle and two kidnappers were arrested while three others escaped”.

Police recovered a pistol M-20 (.9mm) and a dagger from the arrested persons. The arrested people claimed that they are working with headman of Samasi village, Jialwis Paslein.

Both the arrested persons have been remanded in three-day police custody and police are interrogating them to ascertain their involvement in other criminal activities in the area.
