TURA: Unidentified gunmen opened fire on a group of traders returning from Mellim market on Monday and injured three before looting them of their money and mobile phones.

The incident happened near Hajongpara village when the traders from Assam were returning in a pick-up truck after selling their wares at the weekly market in Mellim late afternoon.Over half dozen men halted their vehicle and reportedly sought out one Hussain who was a areca nut trader.

On not finding their victim, the armed men looted the occupants of the vehicle of all their valuables including mobile phones and also fired a few rounds at them before fleeing.

Three traders reportedly sustained injuries but only one of them visited a local hospital for first aid.

“It was a mixed gang of dacoits who committed the crime. One trader was discharged with first aid and his injuries were not caused from a gunshot wound,” said district police chief Mukesh Kr Singh.

The two other traders who also sustained injuries proceeded on to Mancachar in Assam. West Garo Hills police have arrested one Rangseng Sangma of Okkapara village in connection with the incident.
