SHILLONG: The much-awaited inauguration of the newly-constructed Kolkata Meghalaya House at Russel Street may take place in the early part of next year.

Indicating this here on Wednesday, a senior government official on condition of anonymity informed that the construction of the sewerage connecting the main sewerage system of Kolkata city is nearing completion.

“The work is expected to be completed within two weeks,” he said.

The official also informed that the tender for furnishing works for the rooms have already been floated.

“We are expecting to allot the work for furnishing of the rooms at the earliest,” the official said. When asked about the tentative deadline to inaugurate the project, the official source said that it was difficult to predict.

“We would like to inaugurate the project by the end this year. But there are possibilities that inauguration might take place only in the early part of next year due to the pending furnishing work and completion of the sewerage system,” official sources added. The project has hit several hurdles with the cost escalating from the initial Rs 22 crore to Rs 49.2 crore. Earlier on August 5 last year, the State Public Works Department (PWD) formally took over the newly-constructed building from the construction agency, M/s Asian Housing and Infrastructure Pvt. Limited (AHIPL)
