Garo NGOs form Unified movement to end militancy violence
TURA: Several Garo NGOs led by the A’chik Mothers’ Association have met in Tura and decided to form a unified movement to end militancy by bringing the disgruntled youth back to the main stream and creating a peace pact within two months time.
NGOs from the mothers group (AMA), GSU, AYWO, FKJGP, ADE, Citizens Forum, including Rev. Fr Janurius Sangma held a meeting at Don Bosco School Tura on Tuesday evening to discuss the ongoing cycle of violence taking place in the Garo Hills region.
Those present at the meet strongly felt the need to bring back the youth who had gone astray and joined armed organizations. Several members raised concern over the mushrooming of more armed outfits and the subsequent rise in crime including abductions and killings.
In the light of rising crime, the elders and leaders of the organizations unanimously decided to form the Unified Peace Movement for Garo Hills (UPMGH) with fifteen members in the organizing committee who would tour the length and breadth of Garo Hills creating awareness on the need for peace.
The unified movement would also extend an olive branch to the various armed outfits to shun the path of violence and return to the main stream. For this the unified movement is preparing a “Peace Pact” that will be revealed to the public of Garo Hills within two months time.
Former Meghalaya minister and well known citizen of Tura, Mrs Miriam D Shira, while chairing the peace meet said that mothers would lead the way in bringing back the sons to the main stream and end the violence.
GSU President Tengsak G Momin, FKJGP president Pritam R Marak, AYWO president Adinson Ch Momin, and ADE president Dalseng Bira Ch Momin also spoke during the peace meet and gave their support to the unified movement.
