Forces not the only means to tackle militancy: Barkos

SHILLONG: With the home department banking on deployment of additional forces to tackle insurgency, the Acting Chief Secretary Barkos Warjri on Monday said that force is not the only means to address militancy.

“Force is not the only means to tackle militancy as there are also other means including development initiatives, creating social awareness and launching confidence building measures for the people”, Warjri told reporters.

According to Warjri, what is important is that people should not cow down to the pressure tactics of the militants.

He also said that the Government must take measures to improve the law and order situation in Garo Hills so that the citizens are safe. Asked about the growing attack on magistrates in Garo Hillsby the militants, Warjri said that there is a challenge in addressing the issue and added that efforts are being made to ensure peace in Garo Hlls.
