PREPAK militant arrested

Guwahati: A militant of Manipur based People Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK) was apprehended by a joint Assam and Manipur police team here, Defence sources said on Saturday. Based on specific intelligence provided by army’s Gajraj Intelligence, a joint operation was launched at Saokuchi, under Garchuck Police Station, and the militant Leishungbam Bheigyachandra Singh (35) was nabbed yesterday, the sources said. Three mobile hand sets, seven SIM Cards, two driving licenses, five cheque books, six bank pass books, one Passport, two loose cheque leaves and a scooter recovered from him, the sources said. Singh had joined PLA in 1996 and underwent armed training in 1998 before joining PREPAK in 2010, they said, adding, he was staying in Guwahati for some time now to manage account transactions for his outfit after receiving money from various sources to be sent to the higher functionaries of the outfit through different bank accounts. He was using the cover of a vehicle dealer to avoid detection, the sources said. (PTI)

Rio urges Nagas to give him a chance to serve them in LS

Kohima: Nagaland Chief Minister, Neiphiu Rio has assured to tirelessly continue to serve the Nagas with utmost sincerity and complete dedication, if he is given the opportunity to represent Nagaland in Parliament. A day after being declared as the consensus candidate of the Democratic Alliance of Nagaland (DAN) comprising the NPF, BJP and JD(U), Rio through a statement appealed to all sections of the people, including political parties to extend their support and solidarity for his candidature “so that collectively we can address the problems and issues facing our people in a united manner.” Thanking all sections of the people for reposing their confidence in his leadership, he appealed to one and all to extend their blessings to him and support his candidature.Rio also extended gratitude to and appreciation to all rank and files of the NPF, BJP and JD(U) for believing in him and having the confidence in him to represent Nagaland in Parliament. e especially thanked Shurhozelie, President of the NPF and DAN Chairman, for his continued support and tremendous efforts in strengthening his leadership. io was official declared the consensus candidate of DAN after a closed door meeting of the three partners on Thursday. 4 more bodies recovered along Assam-Arunachal border

Tezpur (Assam): Four highly-decomposed bodies were recovered on Saturday by locals from the jungles of Chaoldhowa under the Behali Reserve Forest in Assam’s Sonitpur district along Arunachal Pradesh, police said. The bodies identified to be of Maneswar Munda, Burha Teron, Bishoni Teron and Suren Kramcha, according to Sonitpur SP Sanjukta Parasar. The hands were found tied and there were several wounds of sharp weapons, police said. Locals informed the police after discovering bodies of the four, who were missing since January 29 last when 11 CPI(ML) supporters were killed and many others injured by miscreants from Arunachal Pradesh, they said. The bodies were sent to Ketela Mission hospital here for postmortem, they added. With the recovery of the four bodies today the toll in January 29 attack has gone up to 15, they said, adding tension prevails in the area. Following the attack an eight-day economic blockade against Arunachal Pradesh was launched jointly by several organisations on January 30 demanding punishment to the culprits. In the Assembly on February 13 the Assam government had charged the Arunachal Pradesh government of carrying out “some activities and implementing some schemes” at Bihali area. (PTI)

Teacher convicted for molesting six-year-old girl

Agartala: A local count of Kamalpur in Dhalai district of North Tripura has awarded two-year rigorous imprisonment to one 22-year-old youth and slapped fine of Rs 10,000 to an art teacher for molesting a six-year-old girl. After a long hearing, the court convicted the accused a teacher by profession under section 354 of Indian Panel Code (IPC) and directed to serve two months more in jail unless pay 10,000. The Public prosecutor Siddhartha Singha Choudhury stated that the girl had been learning art in a private school run by the accused teacher Pintu Debnath in Ambassa. Taking the advantage of loneliness, Pintu had molested the girl in the school in 2010 when she was dropped in the school around 1.30 pm. Neighbours of the school rescued the girl after hearing her screams but Pintu fled away from the spot. The victim’s family lodged a complaint with the police immediately and the accused was arrested after a week of committing the crime. Finally, he was convicted yesterday. (UNI)
