SHILLONG: An Executive Committee led by HSPDP will be formed in the KHADC soon as per the arrangements being worked out by the regional parties.

HSPDP vice president Ardent Basaiawmoit, who was instrumental in bagging maximum seats for the party, is likely to be elected as the next Chief Executive Member.

The regional parties had a meeting on Thursday night, following which Basaiawmoit informed that the regional parties had decided to work together and are set to hold a joint meeting on Friday evening.

“We will ensure stable governance in KHADC,” Basaiawmoit said.

UDP chief Dr. Donkupar Roy said on Thursday that since HSPDP is the single largest regional party with seven seats, by convention, it would lead the Executive Committee supported by UDP which has six members and KHNAM with four representatives.

The Congress secured only 10 seats in KHADC.

The lone NCP member Sanbor Shullai may not extend support to the regional parties since his party is supporting the Congress-led MUA-II Government, while there are indications that the lone Independent candidate from Mawhati James Sylliang may support the ) EC to be formed by the regional parties.

Commenting on the combination of the regional parties, Dr. Roy recalled his earlier comments that the UDP, HSPDP and KHNAM would work together in the KHADC.

The UDP leader said that though the party had expected eight seats to win, it got six in KHADC and an identical number in JHADC. The UDP had eight members in the JHADC in the last election, but seven of them had defected to the Congress.

Earlier, speaking to reporters, UDP working president Bindo M Lanong said that the people have given mandate to the regional parties to work together.

He also said that there was no problem with HSPDP leading the EC since as per convention it is the largest party among the regional outfits.

The HSPDP leader Basaiawmoit had also said that it favoured the idea of working with the regional parties in KHADC. “Even if the Congress approaches us, we would prefer working with the regional parties,” Basaiawmoit said.

KHNAM working president Adelbert Nongrum said that the KHNAM members have decided to support the move to form a non-Congress Executive Committee in the KHADC.

“We are all out to see that a non-Congress EC is formed in the KHADC,” Nongrum informed after an emergency meeting of the party on Thursday night.

He said that a clear picture about the formation of the EC will emerge on Friday when a joint meeting of all the three regional parties will be held.
