TURA: In a move aiming to boost taekwondo as a sport in the region, the West Garo Hills District Sports Office, in collaboration with the Garo Hills Taekwondo Association, organised a three-day Advance Taekwondo Coaching Camp from February 27-March 1.
Altogether, 40 new student trainees participated in the coaching camp, which was held at the Tura Police Public Secondary School premises.
During the three-day camp, instruction was provided by 5th Dan Black Belt Eugene K Marak and his associate Black Belt instructors Papak Cheran Momin, Mathew Ch Momin, Rakesh Lohar, Roshan Pradha and Dipakar Paul.
The coaching camp was held with an objective of instilling confidence in the participants, as well as motivating and training the interested youth in order to enable them to compete in district, state and national-level championships, informed Marak.
Stating that they will also hold block-level coaching camps in the near future, Marak urged the youth to take advantage of the camps.
He also expressed concern over the dearth of adequate land to set up a permanent training institute dedicated to the sport in the region.
Nevertheless, training in taekwondo is being conducted and Marak said that youngsters interested could enroll themselves for the early morning 5:00am to 8:00am classes, which are held everyday at the Police Public Secondary School (Pechon Memorial School).
