SHILLONG: Sabyasachi Pal Chowdhury, the impostor who was arrested on Monday for impersonating as a police official, had donned multiple roles to cheat people and acquire wealth, police revealed on Tuesday, while informing that the self-styled personal security officer of the accused identified as Amit Sen was also arrested.
Police also recovered over Rs 2 lakh from the possession of Chowdhury.
Besides acting as a police official, Chowdhury had also posed as a spiritual guru, astrologer and a doctor, police said.
Briefing reporters on the nefarious activities of 52-year-old Chowdhury, SP (Shillong city) Vivek Syiem informed that besides posing as a senior IPS officer working for Meghalaya Police, Chowdhury had also posed as an official of BSF, SSB, DIG Rashtriya Rifles, CBI and IB, among others. He had, from time of time, assumed the role of a doctor and a godman.
Chowdhury, known to many as ‘Baba Chowdhury’, is married and has a child.
During search, police recovered intoxicants from the room where Chowdhury conducted his rituals.
Several contraceptives were recovered from his house, police informed.
Police are also investigating whether he was involved in any sexual crimes on female devotees and wanted people to report such cases, if any, to the police.
“We will keep their names anonymous as we want to find out more details about his criminal activities,” Syiem said.
Besides several bottles of intoxicants, which are set to be sent for lab tests, police also seized 200 gm of ganja (hemp) from the residence of the accused.
On Monday, based on information, the Special Cell of the Police conducted a raid at Brinbon Mansions, Laitumkhrah and recovered one dark blue Mahindra Scorpio (ML05E-2594) parked outside his house with a red beacon and a designation plate of DIG rank officer with  ‘POLICE’ inscribed on it. Chowdhury allegedly drove his vehicle only in the night time.
While searching the house, incriminating items like photographs of the suspect in uniforms, several police and army uniforms including fatigues, caps, pips and flaps of various ranks, car flags, documents and I-Cards of SSB, BSF, CBI, and  other security organisations, seals, visiting cards, six cell phones, several chemicals packed in small bottles suspected to be intoxicants, cannabis, two air pistols with one packet of air-gun pellets and cash of Rs. 2,31,655 were recovered.
Several documents were also found from the house clearly indicating that Chowdhury had been earlier arrested in a cheating case for impersonating as additional SP.
After his arrest on Monday, Laitumkhrah police have booked him in as many as ten charges under various sections of the IPC.
Police interrogations have revealed that Chowdhury was running a fake corporate company to dupe people and had also lured people by offering jobs in the police organisation.
Police are also looking into the angle of a car theft racket involving the accused who originally hails from West Bengal.
Chowdhury had also visited Bangalore and stayed in Rilbong for some time, police said.
