SHILLONG: A scam in MGNREGS came to the fore with the cash memo related to the construction of a village road under East Khasi Hills showing more quantity of materials used for the work than those provided at the work sites.

As per an official document, a spot inquiry revealed discrepancies in the materials shown in cash memo and the materials used at the work sites at Mawkylla Pynglun-Laitmudi under Sohiong police station.

While 126 bags of cement were shown to have used in cash memo, the actual use of cement at the work site was 101 bags.

Other materials used in the road project as shown in cash memo is boulders (11 trucks), stone chips (8 trucks) sand (11 trucks and 3 trailers) stones used for construction of wall (12 trucks and 5 trailers) and stones (2 trucks and one trailer).

However, the figures as per the expenditure at worksite are boulders (8 trucks), stone chips (1 truck), sand (4 trucks), stones used for wall (12 trucks) and stones (two and half trucks). The difference in the materials including cements as diverted materials would come around Rs 2 lakh.

The information was gathered by the youths of the village through an RTI filed by them earlier.
