SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma hails from the Garo Hills, but the area has been neglected so much by the State Government that its main centre Tura does not even have an intensive care unit. And, Sangma himself admitted in the assembly that he himself had to suffer a personal bereavement because of this shortcoming.

The Chief Minister revealed that his mother-in-law had lost her life as there was no ICU in Tura. “There was no ICU in Tura which resulted in the death of my mother-in-law,” he said, while replying to the debate on the Governor’s address.

He admitted that people were compelled to shift patients to private hospitals as there were not even facilities for diagnosis in government hospitals. “We have provided funds to all Government hospitals to improve the facilities”, Dr Sangma said.
