Diphu: The first unit of 13 MW Mingtrang hydroelectric project in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district, commissioned on March 3 last, stopped production since March 12 due to opposition from local residents.
Production of the project was forced to halt barely after a week due to opposition from the residents of the locality who have alleged that Assam Power Distribution Company Ltd (APDCL) has not paid them compensation against land accusation for the project even after its commissioning.
A meeting held between the agitating villagers whose land has been utilised and Chief General Manager (Hydro) Atul Chandra Baruah at Amtrang inspection bungalow on March 12 failed to break the impasse.
Leaders of the Mingtrang development committee said unless the authority clears the sum due against the acquisition of land spread over four villages where the project has been built, the affected people will not allow further production.
They also pointed out that as the project site is within the Sixth schedule area, the land cannot be procured through ordinary procedure.
Volunteers of Mingtrang development committee have blocked all approach roads of the project and forced the employees to stop production since March 12. (UNI)
