Alleged assault of youths by Inspector
SHILLONG: Chokpot legislator Clifford R Marak has demanded that there should be an independent inquiry into allegation that the Circle Inspector of Tura police station was involved in the harassment of two youths on the night of February 19.
“The police report will always be biased since they would try to protect their own people. I strongly feel that the matter should be investigated by an independent authority,” Marak said while moving a cut motion in the Assembly on Friday to a news item under the caption “Victims complaint harassment by Tura police official” which had appeared in The Shillong Times here on Friday. Earlier in her reply, Home Minister Roshan Warjri said that after investigation into matter, the police found that there is no truth behind the allegations against the Tura Circle Inspector.
On the demand of the Chokpot legislator, the Home Minister made an assurance that she would examine if there is a need to have an independent inquiry into the case.
It may be mentioned that a letter of complaint against the Circle Inspector was submitted to the West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner by two youths along with their respective family members alleging harassment against them. The incident reportedly took place on the night of February 19 when a school teacher from Tura, C M Momin, S/o (Lt) B K Sangma from Proper Chandmary and a friend R K Marak were picked up by the officer from a roadside near Nepali Puja Mandap at Akonggre and were allegedly meted out inhuman treatment. The two were allegedly severely beaten up and handcuffed for mug shots before being sent to the Tura Civil Hospital for medical examination. It was only after verification of documents furnished that the two were let off on Personal Bail Bond.
