SHILLONG: Shillongites were on Friday enthralled by noted pianist, conductor, singer, teacher and composer Neecia Majolly who performed here at an event organized by the Aroha Music and Cultural Society in collaboration with the Department of Arts and Culture.

Majolly who has emerged as one of the most dynamic musical forces in the country performed the piano and keyboard classics from the Baroque (1750) to the modern era (1900) as well as music theatre with finesse and passion delivering stylistically appropriate performances.

Each piece was introduced with an informative background which put the listeners in touch with what they were hearing on stage.

Majolly also charmed the audience with songs from musicals like “My Fair Lady” “Oklahoma” “Phantom of the Opera” “Spamalot” among others.

With an aim to promote music education, a two-hour workshop on piano and vocal technique for music students of the city was also organised on the occasion.

Aroha Music and Cultural Society’s Pauline Warjri said, “It was the crowning part of the musical journey for students that were studying either voice or the piano to see a live performance of the music that they were studying.”

Warjri said the society will continue to organise such recitals to give a platform for young performers in the city.

Majolly has several successful solo performances to her credit in Malaysia, Singapore, Western Australia, Brunei and India, and was also accompanist to Russian-American violinist Galina Heifetz in India.

Under her baton, two choirs, Madrigals Etc. (specializing in music from the Middle Ages and Renaissance eras) and the Camerata have earned firm reputation in India for being unique in their choice of repertoire and quality of presentation.
