JOWAI: Due to the deplorable condition of National Highway 44, a precious life was lost in an accident involving a head-on collision between a mini-bus (ML04-9320) and a truck (AS01BC-8515) on Monday afternoon at Kongong in East Jaintia Hills.

In the accident, a passenger of the bus identified as Ram Phalangki (40) of Mynsngat village succumbed to his injuries while on the way to a hospital.

Sources informed that the bus was on its way to Ladrymbai from Jowai. On reaching Kongong- while trying to avoid pot-holes, it was hit by a coal-laden truck coming from the opposite direction. The bus capsized and many passengers were injured, some of them critically.

“The person died due to heavy bleeding after a windshield broke and pierced his stomach,” a source said.

At least 15 others passengers who sustained injuries were rushed to Ialong District Civil Hospital for medical treatment.
