Editor,
The Chief Minister’s remark on veteran Purno A. Sangma’s decision to contest the forthcoming election as a ‘death wish’ is nothing short of deplorable, unethical, immature, highly derogatory, and sheds very poor light on the leader of this state. Death is as uncertain as life. The events that unfold at every hour are unpredictable. Life, which is transient, reveals surprises at every step. For example, it was surprising that the person who was vocal about the CM’s links with the ANVC (B) was shot dead. It was also not expected that his face would not be revealed to the world. It indeed was a surprise! Therefore, people who licentiously talk about others, like the slain ANVC (B) cadre, are soon entrapped by the jaws of death. He should have thought a thousand times before he opened his mouth. Similarly, the stinging remark about “death” and the wishes before it should not have been spoken impetuously as it could have irked the sentiments of many who are neither drowned in a sea of pride and fallacy nor are impressed by the empty rhetoric of those who build a 40 crore mansion on the one hand, and cancel schemes meant for the poor on the other. I wonder whose political death knell is ringing sooner. Election debates should be issue-based and should circumvent personal mudslinging.

Appointment at Meghalaya Secretariat.
Editor,
With regard to the newly selected candidates for the post of Lower Division Assistant at the Meghalaya Secretariat, I would like to point out that the selection and interview took place from the 21st to 23rd October 2013. A total of 60 candidates have been selected and so far none have received appointment letters. It is understood that every Department takes considerable time in providing appointments, but it becomes difficult for selected candidates if a time frame is not given. This issue is being highlighted because, out of the sixty selected candidates, not all are currently employed. Initially, some candidates have quit their current occupations with the hope of getting government appointment. In other cases candidates are in a dilemma on whether to join private institutions because some of these institutions require signing of legal bonds for a certain period of time. Since no guarantee whatsoever has been provided after the selection process, the candidates are in a dilemma about whether they will finally be absorbed and whether the appointment would lapse after a certain time frame.
Through this column, I would like to request the Personnel Department of the Government to kindly consider the plight of the selected candidates and at least give out a notice or circular that the selected candidates would be duly appointed on a particular date and time, so that they can take a call on the matter.
Yours etc…
