Meghalaya High Court celebrates first anniversar

780 cases lay pending

SHILLONG: As the High Court of Meghalaya completes a year of existence on Sunday, as many as 780 cases lay pending. This was revealed during a presentation on the occasion of the anniversary celebrations of the Court held here.

Justice T Meena Kumari was sworn in as the first Chief Justice of Meghalaya High Court exactly a year ago even as the Court was formally inaugurated on March 25 by the then Chief Justice of India Altamas Kabir.

A power point presentation on the occasion highlighted the contributions of the first Chief Justice of Meghalaya High Court apart from underlining the efforts of the current Chief Justice PC Pant in ensuring that judiciary moves from strength to strength in the State.

The presentation besides depicting the journey of the High Court and its achievements so far also highlighted the ongoing separation of the judiciary from the executive that took place in four districts viz., East Khasi Hills, West Jaintia Hills, Ri-Bhoi and West Garo Hills.

It was also informed that the separation of the judiciary from the executive would also take place shortly in West Khasi Hills and East Garo Hills districts of the State.

A cultural event was also organized on the occasion in which a special mention was made on the contributions of Chief Justice Pant who has taken steps which ‘would go a long way in helping lawyers and litigants.’

The contribution of the State particularly that of Chief Minster Dr Mukul Sangma who extended full support to the High Court especially in financial matters was also commended during the anniversary celebrations.

Chief Justice PC Pant, Justice TNK Singh, Justice SR Sen, Advocate General KS Kynjing, Additional Advocate General WHD Syngkon, senior advocates, members of the bar and the staff of the registry among others attended the function.

During the occasion the audience was also treated to an excellent display of traditional folk dance and melodious music by the troupe led by Silbi Passah.
